In providing coordinated hospice care aimed at helping people with life-threatening illnesses maintain their identity, dignity and freedom from pain and anxiety, Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island offers a variety of programs and support services for patients and their loved ones.
Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island offers the following services:
Physician services for the medical direction of the patient's care
Regular home visits by nurses
Inpatient care at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center when circumstances do not allow an individual at the end of life to remain at home.
Palliative Care is a specialized treatment option that offers advanced pain and symptom management to patients with chronic, progressive illnessness - such as, heart disease, lung disease, dementia or cancer - regardless of prognosis. The goal of Palliative Care is to improve the quality of a patient's life.
Education: We provide education about care, the disease process and changes that may occur in a patient's condition.
Home health aide services for personal care, such as dressing and bathing
Social services and emotional support: We help find resources in the community for additional and ongoing support, help family members deal with psychological stress, ethical dilemmas and help people navigate resources such as health insurance coverage and medical costs.
End-of-life decision guidance: HHCRI can help with talking about difficult issues that arise at the end of life. We can assist with advance care planning and help with funeral arrangements.
Spiritual care: We are available for regular pastoral care visits and are on call during times of crises or to contact a patient's own clergy.
Bereavement support services: HHCRI offers grief counseling, support groups, including in specialized areas, such as for young widows/widowers; parents who have lost adult children; for gay men and lesbians; and even for knitters.
We also provide support groups for children and a two-day summer camp, Camp BraveHeart, for children dealing with grief.
Dedicated volunteers are available to read to patients, play cards, shop or do errands for a patient, visit bereaved families to offer emotional support, work on special events, provide office support.
Complementary Therapies: In addition to medical care, Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island offers a mix of complementary therapies to its patients and families to help reduce stress and enhance one's well being. These therapies are used in conjunction with, rather than as a replacement for, a biomedical treatment. Patients and family members interested in these services should speak to their Case Manager (RN) for a referral.

Pet Therapy uses trained animals and certified handlers to provide patients, families and staff with comfort and companionship.

Music Therapy is used to address pain and discomfort, produce comfort, induce sleep and provide an atmosphere of relaxation and calm for patients and families.

Reiki/Healing Touch Therapy is an ancient Japanese healing art of "laying on hands" which utilizes the power of touch to evoke deep peace and relaxation.

Massage Therapy involves the manipulation of the soft tissue structures of the body to prevent and alleviate pain, discomfort, muscle spasm, and stress and, to promote health and wellness.
Medical equipment: We arrange for delivery of medications, medical equipment and supplies to your home.
Special events: To remember loved ones, we hold an Annual Celebration of Remembrance in the spring or early summer and several Light Up A Life Tree Lightings around the holidays. The Philanthropy Department also holds several fundraisers each year: Family Day at McCoy Stadium and an Annual Invitational Golf Tournament are also held. In 2012 a Sailing Regatta is also being planned.
Speaker's Bureau: Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island's Speaker's Bureau is a community resource providing speakers at no cost to clubs, organizations, faith-based groups, senior centers and other interested audiences. Individuals receiving hospice care have the option of choosing which services they prefer. Only nursing is required.
